Chapter 5: Integumentary System Flashcards
The technical term for “skin” is ______ membrane?
cutaneous membrane
Functions of Skin
-
Protects
- protects underlying tissues and organs from both physical forces and biological pathogens. Also from water loss to the environment.
-
Excretes
- excreates salts, water, and organic wastes (via glands)
-
Maintains
- body temperatures via insulation and evaporation
-
Synthesizes
- vitamin D3
-
Stores
- lipids
-
Detects
- touch, pressure, pain, and temperature
The two parts of the cutaneous membrane are…?
Epidermis and Dermis
Epidermis location and composition
Outermost (most superficial layer of the cutaneous membrane) and is composed of stratified squamous epithelial tissue—> many layers
Dermis location and structure
Just underneath the epidermis (deep to the epidermis) and is composed of areolar, and dense irregular conective tissue
Describe the hypodermis and is it apart of the cutaneous membrane?
Consist of loose connective tissues adipose and areolar and it is not apart of the cutaneous membrane.
What are accessory structures?
- Hair
- Nails
- Glands
- Sensory structures
Which accessory structures originate in the dermis BUT extend through the epidermis to skin surface?
Hair, Glands, Nails
The epidermis can be ____ or ____ layers thick? These layers are called what?
4, 5. Layers are called Strata!!!!!
What is the main cell type of the epidermis?
Keratinocyte
What do Keratinocytes produce?
A protein called keratin
What two layers does the dermis contain in order from superficial to deep.
Papillary layer(superficial)
Reticular Layer(Deep)
What are the layers of the epidermis in order from superifical to deep?
- Stratum Corneum
- Stratum Lucidum
- Stratum Granulosum
- Straum spinosum
- Stratum Basale
What three types of cells occupy the stratum basale?
Keratinocytes, Melanocytes, Tactile Cells
What layer is only present in “thick” skin?
Stratum lucidium
What is the process that cells undergo in the stratum granulosum?
Keratinization
The stratum corneum has living or dead keratinocytes?
Dead.
The epidermal dendritic cells are found in which layer?
Stratum Sponosum
What process occurs in the stratum granulosum?
Keratinization
What protein is found in the stratum lucidum?
eleidin
