Anatomical Position Terms Flashcards
This is what position? Why is it important?
Anatomical Position. It is important because it serves as a standardized frame of reference for all structures. Many names will have “right”, “left”,”inferior”, etc., some type of location identifier and it is based on this position.
The ______ plane separates the body into _____ and ______
Transverse, top and bottom (superior/inferior)
The _____ plane separates the body into _____ and _____
Sagittal, left and right
The ______ or ______ plane separates the body into _____ and ______
Frontal or Coronal, front (anterior) and back (posterior)
This plane cuts the body into any type of angle that is NOT perfectly horizontal or vertical.
Oblique
Posterior or dorsal
Towards the backside of the body.
Anterior or Ventral
Towards the Front of the Body
Cranial
Towards the head
Distal
Furthest from the point of attachment to trunk. The wrist is distal to the elbow.
Proximal
Closest to point of attachment to trunk. The elbow is proximal to the hand.
Superficial
On the outside, external to another structure. The skin is superficial to the biceps brachii muscle.
Deep
On the inside, internal to another structure. the heart is deep to the ribcage.
Contralateral
On the opposite side. The right arm is contralateral to the left leg.
Ipsilateral
On the same side. the right arm is ipsilateral to the right leg.
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body. The arms are lateral to the heart.
