Conditions of the CVS Flashcards
What is ischaemia?
in which the blood flow (and thus oxygen) is restricted or reduced in a part of the body
What is atherosclerosis?
arteries become clogged with fatty substances called plaques, or atheroma.
What is angina?
chest pain due to ischaemia
What is myocardial infarction?
when a part of the heart muscle doesn’t get enough blood. The more time that passes without treatment to restore blood flow, the greater the damage to the heart muscle.
What is atrial fibrillation?
fast and irregular heart beat
What is STEMI?
A heart attack with a completely blocked coronary artery
What is postural hypotension
form of low blood pressure that happens when standing after sitting or lying down.
What is hypovolemia?
low blood volume
What is oedema?
excess fluid trapped in your body’s tissues
What is thrombosis?
when blood clots block veins or arteries (final step in hemostasis)
What is inotrophy, chronotrophy, dromotrophy and lusitrophy?
inotrophy - contractility
chronotrophy - heart rate
dromotrophy - rate of conduction
lusitropy - rate of relaxation
