Components of a bone Flashcards
What is the bone matrix
calcium phosphate and collagen fibres (complex proteins) have osteoblasts embedded
when do the osteoblasts mature and what do they become?
they mature once they have been surrpunded by calcified bone matrix. become osteocytes
function of collagen fibres
provide the tissue with strength and structural support
what surrounds the collagen fibres and makes the bone very hard
hydroxyaptite crystals (Calcium Phosphate)
are osteoclasts more or less common than osteoblasts
less common
where are osteoclasts found?
edge of each piece of bone
function of osteoclasts
eat away at surface of bone > remodelling of the bone > necessary for growth of the bone
what family of cells do the osteoclasts belong to?
phagocytes
what two hormones control the balance between bone formation and bone destruction
calcitonin and parathyroid hormone (PTH)
what gland produces calcitonin and what does this hormone promote? does this decrease or increase calcium?
thyroid gland, bone growth, decreases calcium (ca taken up into bones). think of calcium toning down calcitonin
what gland produces PTH and what does this hormone promote?
parathyroid glands which sit on the back of the thyroid gland, bone degradation
what activity does PTH increase
Osteoclast
if there was a rise in ca2+ in blood, what happens
thyroid gland stimulated > increase in osteoblast activity >calcitonin > calcitonin stimulates calcium salt deposit in bone
