Types of Bone Tissue Flashcards
what two types of bone tissue form a bone
compact and spongy
Describe compact bone
Dense, protects and supports bone. basic unit of structure (osteon)
Describe spongy bone
light weight, spongy like with spaces and trabeculae, lattice of irregular sheets (no osteon)
where do osetocytes reside and which junctions does that reside in
osteocytes reside in small cavities lacunae at junctions in the osteon rings (lamellae)
what connects the lacunae to one another
canaliculi
the cannaliculi then also connects it to what larger canal? what does this canal contain?
haversian canal, contains blood and nerve supply
what are the inner parts of bones organised into?
a network of struts known as trabeculae
what does the network of struts known as trabeculae result in
honeycomb appearance known as spongy bone
arrangement of the struts makes bones…what?
resistant to damage
presence of spongy bone makes what easier?
movement
what feature makes bone light?
hollow, filled with bone marroq
name 2 types of marrow
red and yellow
red marrow is the site of what and where is it found
spongy bone and blood cell production
yellow marrow is the site of what and found where?
site of fat (triglyceride) storage found in medullary cavity of long bones
a typical long bone has what?
two epiphyses, one diaphysis and periosteum
what does the two epiphyses contain?
contain spongy bone and red marrow . capped with articular cartilage.
spongy bone between two layers of compact bone is called what?
diploe
describe the process of how nutrients reaches the osteocytes
nutrients from blood vessels > through canaliculi > to osteocytes
what is the diaphysis
compact bone containing yellow bone marrow
describe the periosteum
white membrane that covers the surface of the bone except for joint surfaces of the epiphyses.
functions of the periosteum
reduces frictions, absorbs shock when joints move.
