Common Neurotransmitters Flashcards

1
Q

Used in the brain and autonomic nervous system(esp. in triggering sympathetic nervous system “fight or Flight” bodily response) . Is usually excitatory.

Q

A neurotransmitter in the brain. Dopamine can be used to [revent overstimulation of muscles(therefore , lack of dopamine can lead to Parkinson’s Dx symptoms) in the lambic system of the brain, high levels of dopamine can increase mood, and even give a “high”sensation(for ex. In cocaine use) Low levels of dopamine may trigger depression.

A

Dopamine

Q

In the brain, low ( this ) level may decrease mood(cause depression) and decrease attention span. Along with nor epinephrine and histamine. It may influence sleep and awake cycles.

Q

Is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. Excessive levels of slutamte in the brain can be damaging. High levels of slutamate(or increased glutamate sensitivity) may possibly be a contributing factor in Huntington’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Dx , Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) and fibromyalgia.

A

Glutamate

Q

Can be released locally or can be released as a neurotransmitter. It is an important mediator in the inflammatory response, triggers gastric acid secretion and is present in allergic reactions. As a neurotransmitter, it can influence sleep/awake cycles an may play a role in the symptoms of schizophrenia.

A

Histamine
