Cognitive aging Flashcards
extra chapter 2
dual aging
there are more adults due to increased longevity.
Why do we age?
There is no evolutionary pressure to promote successful aging. As we can not reproduce anymore.
grandmother hypothesis
grandmother watches the children and therefore helps to pass on the genes.
circadian rhythm - body temperature
Curve of temperature flattens when we get older, this results in less deep sleep and therefore worsens memory consolidation.
ontogenesis
development of the individual
fylogenesis
development of the species
last in first out:
The prefrontal cortex develops last and deteriorates first.
Problems aging and prefrontal cortex and hippocampus
problems with:
flexibility (switching tasks)
working memory
planning
impulse control
orienting (in self and space)
