Chapter 19 Flashcards
Risks and resilience
resilience
when children experience positive outcomes despite experiencing significant risks
2 conditions for resilience to occur:
- exposure to a threat or severe adversity
- achievement of positive adaptation
risk factors
catastrophic events or exposure to negative environments.
protective factors
anything that prevents or reduces vulnerability for development of a disorder
vulnerability factors
attributes of an individual that contribute to maladjustment under conditions of adversity
risk and age
risk varies according to age, for example children are more vulnerable to adversities involving their caregivers
intergenerational cycle of difficulties
ways in which parents communicate traumatic events
internalizing behavior problems
withdrawal, inhibition, anxiety or depression.
late onset
externalizing behavior problems
delinquent activities, aggression and hyperactivity.
early onset
cumulative risk
the ways in which multiple risk factors have a cumulative effect on child outcomes
cumulative risk theory
the sum of risk factors is what leads to disfunction because it overwhelms the adaptive capacities of the individual
risk specificity
characteristics of a specific risk
allostasis
from psychological stressor to baseline
equifinality
multiple risk factors lead to one problem
multifinality
one risk factor leads to multiple problems
