Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia Flashcards
What is CML?
Chronic myeloid leukaemia
Neoplastic proliferation of mature myeloid cells (granulocytes)
What are risk factors for CML?
Age (older)
Radiation
What translocation is associated with CML?
t(9;22)
Philadelphia chromosome
What investigations are done for suspected CML?
FBC
Blood film
Bone marrow biopsy
What does the FBC show in CML?
Leucocytosis
Thrombocytosis/thrombocytopenia
Anaemia
Raised granulocyte count
What does the blood film show in CML?
Increased number of mature granulocytes
What does the bone marrow biopsy show in CML?
Increased number of mature granulocytes
How is CML managed?
Imatinib
- tyrosine kinase inhibitor
What are the phases of CML?
Chronic
Accelerated
Blast
What happens in the chronic phase of CML?
Asymptomatic
Raised WCC
What happens in the accelerated phase of CML?
Abnormal blast cells 10-20%
Symptomatic
What happens in the blast phase?
Blast cells >30%
Pancytopenia
