civil service system
begun by the Han Dynasty and resurrected under the Tang, this was a system in which governmental offices were filled by men who had passed the civil service exams, which tested one’s knowledge of Confucian writings and principles
kowtow
representatives from tributary states did this before the emperor of China; it was a ritualistic bow in which subordinates knelt before the emperor and touched their forehead to the ground several times
Middle Kingdom
the Tang referred to themselves as this, which was a Chinese expression of their view of themselves as dominant; their dominance was certainly true, as revealed by the many surrounding states who paid tribute to them
Jurchen
in the early 12th century, this group of nomads overran northern China, limiting the Song Dynasty to the south, which endured until takeover by the Mongols in 1279
Silla dynasty
in the mid-7th century, this dynasty drove out the Han and controlled the entire Korean peninsula; they developed a writing system based on Chinese characters and constructed Buddhist monasteries
Koryu
in 935 these people overthrew the Silla dynasty; they Sinified more, such as with civil service exams
celadon pottery
this was a primary product of artisans in Korea under the Koryu; it was among the very best in the world
