What is the importance of play?
Associated with the development of social skills in child’s interactions with peers
According to Mildred Parten (1932) what are the levels of play?
- Unoccupied behavior
- Onlooker behavior
- Solitary independent play
- Parallel play
- Associative Play

What is unoccupied behavior?
Looking around at what occurs, but enagaging in noactivity
What is onlooker behavior?
Watching other children play
What is solitary independent play?
Engaging actively with toys that are different from those being used by other children
What is parallel play?
playing next to, but not in interaction with eachother, often using the same type of materials (e.g: blocks, dolls)
What is associative play?
- Playing with other children
- sharing toys
- interacting
- Doing all some or all of the activities listed about, but without a common goal
What is cooperative play?
- play with peers that has a common goal
- Playing as part of a group that has a common goal such as building a building
What are some of the effects of bullying for the perpetrator (the bully)
- more likely to be depressed
- Poor self-concept
- lack self-control
- lower levels of social competence than their peers
- Negative perceptual bias (causes them to see hostile intent in ordinary situations, like if somebody accidentally pushes them, a bully may believe that it was done with malicious intent)
- Often engage in deviant behavior (smoking, drinking, carry a weapon, stealing, damaging property)
- Lower academic achievement
- Lower school adjustment
- Lower bonding to school
What are some of the effects of bullying for the perpetrator (the victim)
- Anxious
- Poor self-concept
- Often feel like they have no friend
- Often feel lonely
powerlessness
suicidal thoughts (b/c of this feeling of powerlessness) - Absenteeism (lack of participation in extracurricular activities)
- Decline in academic performance
What are the types of bullying behaviors?
- Physical
- Verbal
- Relational
- Cyber
What are the characteristics of physical bullying?
- hit
- kicked
- pushed
- shoved around
- locked indoors
What are the characteristics of verbal bullying?
- called names
- teased in a hurtful way
- made fun of
What are the characteristics of relational bullying?
- Social isolation: excluded from a group of friends or ignored
- Spreading rumor: told lies or spread false rumors
What are the characteristics of cyber bullying?
bullied through p.c, email, pics, cell phone
