Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What are the 5 common biochemical reactions?
1- making and breaking carbon bonds 2- molecular re-arrangements 3- free radical rxns 4- group transfers 5- red/oxi rxns (redox)
What is a condensation rxn?
Two molecules joining to create larger molecules
What is a carboxylation/decarboxylation rxn?
Addition or removal of a carboxyl group
What is a free radical?
A molecule with an unpaired electron
How do antioxidants deal with free radicals?
Give up a proton and undergo conformational changes to stabilize
What is a common example of a group transfer rxn?
Phosphorylation
What are REDOX rxns?
Pair of rxns that move electrons to perform work
What are the four ways to transfer electrons?
1- direct electron transfer (reduction)
2- hydrogen atom transfer (reduction)
3- hydride ions (reduction)
4- combination with oxygen (oxidation)
Which direction does a reaction move towards with a positive or negative change in free energy?
Positive- moves toward reactants (anabolism)
Negative- moves toward products (catabolism)
