Chemical Bonds and pH Flashcards
What are the 3 types of chemical bonds?
Covalent, Ionic, and Hydrogen Bonds.
What are the 2 types of covalent bonds?
Non-polar and Polar covalent bonds.
What are non-polar covalent bonds?
Bonds where all the electrons are shared equally between elements. Ex: CH4
What are polar covalent bonds?
Bonds with an unequal sharing of electrons. Ex: H2O
What are ionic bonds?
Bonds which form when one element gives off 1 or 2 electrons which are captured by another element. Ex: NaCl
What are hydrogen bonds?
The weakest bonds. Bond together DNA.
What is cohesion?
When water molecules make hydrogen bonds with each other.
What is an example of cohesion?
Water droplets forming when it rains.
What is adhesion?
When water adheres to polar covalent molecules.
What is an example of adhesion?
Raindrops holding onto the windshield of a car.
Does it take more energy to make or break hydrogen bonds?
It takes more energy to break hydrogen bonds.
What is surface tension?
When hydrogen bonds at the surface of water can resist gravity when small.
What is the universal solvent?
Water.
What are emulsifiers?
Molecules that mixes oil with water.
What is an example of an emulsifier?
Bile and Soap.
