Characteristics Flashcards
• erythritol stimulates replication
• cannot survive acidic envi
• better in colder envi
Brucellosis
• mostly survive INSIDE a host (but also can outside)
• catalase-Negative
Streptococcosis
• in estuarine waters
• horizontal gene transfer
• can form biofilm (persistence)
• SALT
Vibriosis
Invades
1. colonic epithelium
2. rectal epithelium
• modify membrane LPS
• shiga toxin-producing [df]
Shigellosis
colonizes epithelium of small & large intestine
Salmonellosis
salt & drying tolerant
survive gastric acidity
Collibacillosis
• resistant to stomach acid
• has plasmid pYV — distinguish virulent strain from avirulent
Yersiniosis
mostly acute & cutaneous disease of pigs & humans
isolated in:
1. tonsils
2. skin
3. subcutaneous adipose tissue
4. medial iliac lymph nodes
Erysipeloid
less viable in environment except in:
1. damp soil
2. water
virulence factors
1. capsular antigen
2. somatic antigen
Pasteurellosis
• needs high water content
• needs absence of inhibitory conc. of salt (<10%)
• easily inhibited by other bacteria
• spores — long survival time
• toxin inactivated by sunlight
• vegetative cell susceptible to
1) 1% hypochlorite
2) 70% ethanol
3) nitrite-based compound
Botulism
• several months in SOIL
• cold, moist, dark
• rarely isolated from soil & pasture of infected CATTLE
Tuberculosis
