Psychopathology

psychological dysfunction that is ass. w/ distress and/or impairment in functioning that is considered atypical
Dysfunction
breakdown in emotional, cognitive, or behavioral functioning.

Clinical Depression

Prevalence
How many people in population have that issue, sex ratio
Incidence
How many new cases, specific amount of time, usually a year
Age of onset
when do the symptoms or disorders develop
etiology
cause of disorder, usually multiple causes
course of psychological disorders
pattern of development and how it changes over time
episodic course
episode start and ends, starts and ends and so on
there is a pattern of recovery and then another episode
regular onset
is it acute, sudden, gradual?
Supernatural tradition
Abnormal behavior is caused by evil (witch craft, sorcery, devil) Used torture, exorcisms, brain surgery,etc.
Insanity
caused by lots of stress, cured by telling you to relax or sleep in the supernatural traditions.
Biological tradition
Abnormal behavior is explained by physiological and behavioral explanations
Humeral Theory of Disorders
Hippocrats/Galen
we have 4 humors: blood, black bile, yellow bile,and phlegm.
These regulate us so imbalance causes disease/disorders
even personality was determined by these
cured by letting out bad blood or vomiting
Delusion vs Hallucination
D- belief in something that is untrue
H-false perception, seeing or hearing things that are not there
*advanced syphilis has both

John P. Grey
American psychologist
said insanity is always biologically based
pushed for treatment of medical traditions
came up w/ biologically based treatments (insulin shock therapy, lobotomies, ECT)
Psychotropic drugs
neuroleptics (tranquilizers) benzodiazapihens
Results of Biological Tradition
Increased hospitalization because of biological belief

Psychological Tradition
considers social and environmental factors
early 19th century shift toward moral therapy
idea that we should treat patients humanely and morally instead of locking up and medicating
declined mid 19th century

School teacher worked in institutions
told public how bad institutions were and pushed for mental hygiene movement
thought everyone should be treated rich or poor, but this started an increase in patients which decreased quality of mental care
