Communication
the process by which we use symbols, signs, and behaviors to exchange information
Functional Perspective
examines how our communication helps us accomplish our goals in personal, group, organizational, or public situations
Relationships
interconnections between people that function to achieve some goal
Interdependence
our actions affect one another
Goal Achievement
accomplish particular objectives
Control
the ability of one person, group, or organization to influence others
Symbols
arbitrary constructions that refer to objects: people, things, ideas
Code
set of symbols that are joined to create a meaningful message
Encoding
the process of mentally constructing a message
Decoding
the process of interpreting and assigning meaning to a message
Culture
the shared beliefs, values and practices of a group of people
Co-cultures
smaller groups of people within a larger culture who are distinguished by features such as race, religion, age, generation, political affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, educational level, occupation, etc.
Transactional Process
Involves two or more people acting in both sender and receiver roles
Competent Communication
describes communication that is effective and appropriate for a given situation
Process
the means by which participants reach an outcome
Ethics
the study of morals; moral choices individuals make in their relationship with others
Behavior Flexibility
the ability to use a number of different behaviors depending on the situation
Communication Skills
behavioral routines used to achieve particular goals (asking for a raise, maintaining a relationship, etc.)
Linear Model of Communication
Sender originates communication, the message is carried through a channel, noise occurs, message arrives at receiver
Interaction Model
communication is a two-directional process with feedback from receiver
Competent Communication Model
communication occurs simultaneously, sending and receiving messages at the same moment
Cognitions
the thoughts each communicator has
Behavior
observable communication
Relational History
the sum of shared experiences of the individuals in the relationship
Situational Context
social environment, physical place, even a mediated place like social media
