defines something by using words that mean almost the same thing
ex. salsa is basically just chunky sauce, similar to chutney in Indian cuisine
Definition by Etymology
defines something by using the origin of a word or phrase
ex. salsa is the Spanish and Italian word for sauce, derived from the Latin word for salty

answer the “why” questions; use interpretation and analysis
Clarifying Concepts
details that illuminate the concept’s meaning and use
Quasi-scientific Explanations
model or picture key dimensions of some phenomenon for a typical audience; used by people explaining a technical topic to laypeople
Transformative Explanations
help people understand counter-intuitive ideas; transform theories into more accepted notions
