People-oriented Listeners
listen with relationships in mind; concerned with feelings, moods, etc.
Action-oriented Listeners
focus on tasks; organize info into themes
Content-oriented Listeners
carefully evaluate what they hear; prefer to listen to info from credible sources and examine from a variety of angles
Time-oriented Listeners
most concerned with efficiency; prefer clear and to the point information
Informational Listening
comprehensive listening, seek to understand a message
Critical Listening
evaluative listening, evaluate or analyze information, evidence, ideas or opinions
Empathetic Listening
try to know how the other person feels; requires openness, sensitivity, and caring
Paraphrase
rephrasing what you think the speaker has said
Appreciative Listening
take pleasure in sounds - listening to music, poetry, narrations, comedy, plays, movies, tv shows

factors that interfere with comprehension and responses in communication
Multitasking
attending to several things at once
Listening Apprehension
state of uneasiness, anxiety, fear, or dread when in a listening opportunity
Defensive Listening
responding with aggression and arguing with the speaker w/o fully listening to the message
Selective Listening
listen to only bits of information that interest you, disregarding other parts of the message
Selfish/Monopolistic Listening
listening to control the communication interaction
Insensitive Listening
fail to pay attention to the emotional content of someone’s message instead of taking it at face value
Pseudolistening
pretending to listen by nodding or saying “uh-huh” when you’re not paying attention at all
