the way we engage in conflict and address disagreements with our relational partners
Unproductive Conflict
conflict that is managed poorly and has negative impact on those involved
Productive Conflict
conflict that can be managed effectively
Provocation
intentional instigation of conflict
Communication Boundary Management
avoiding conflict because someone is reluctant to discuss certain topics with particular people
Communication Climate
the atmosphere surrounding relationships/communication
Uncertain Climates
at least one person involved is unclear, vague, tentative, and awkward about the expectations or outcomes of the conflict
Defensive Climates
people involved feel threatened (mistrust, suspicion, apprehension)
Supportive Climates
ideal because those involved can honestly and nicely explore the issues involved in the conflict
Flaming
posting online messages that are deliberately hostile or insulting toward a person
Trolling
posting provocative or offensive messages to whole forums or discussion boards to elicit a reaction
Cyberbullying
multiple abusive attacks on individual targets conducted through electronic channels
Escapist Strategies
people try to prevent or avoid direct conflict
Challenging Strategies
promote the objectives of the individual who uses these strategies, rather than the desires of the other person
