attribute our own success to internal factors and attribute our failures to external effects
Interaction Appearance Theory
explains how people change their attributions of someone, esp. physical attractiveness, the more they interact
Cultural Myopia
belief that one’s own culture is appropriate and relevant in all situations and to all people
Stereotyping
using an impression so fixed or set that you apply your perceptions of an entire group to each individual from that group
Pejudice
deep-seated feeling of unkindness and ill will toward particular groups usually based on negative stereotypes and feelings of superiority over those groups
Self-Concept
awareness and understanding of who you are
Social Comparison Theory
influences how we think about ourselves and what we’re willing to do to close the unavoidable gap created by such comparison
Self-Esteem
refers to how you feel about yourself
Self-Efficacy
ability to predict success from self-concept and self-esteem
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
prediction that causes you to change your behavior in a way that makes the prediction more likely to occur
Self-Actualization
the most positive evaluation you can make about your competence level
Self-Adequacy
communication competence is sufficient or acceptable
Self-Deningration
criticizing or attacking yourself
Self-Presentation
intentional communication designed to show elements of self for strategic purposes
Self-Monitoring
ability to watch environment and others in it for cues about how to present yourself in certain situations
Self-Disclosure
revealing information about yourself to others
