Chapter Four Flashcards
Element
A simple substance that cannot be broken down by ordinary chemical means
Atom
The smallest part of the element that still has all the properties of the element
Nucleus of an Atom
The center region of an atom that contains protons and neutrons
Proton
A positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom
Electron
A negatively charged particle in the energy shells surrounding the nucleus of an atom
Energy Shells
The regions surrounding the nucleus of an atom where electrons may be found
Molecule
The smallest part of a compound that still has all the properties of the compound
Compound
A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically bonded together; properties of the compound are different than the properties of the elements that make it up
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded together
Atomic Number
The numbers of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Group
The vertical columns in the Periodic Table of Elements; elements in a group have similar properties
Period
