Chapter 10 Flashcards
Tap Root
A root system with one, very large central root; specialized tor storage
Fibrous Root
A root system made with very small roots; specialized for absorption
Xylem
Straw-like cells that carry water and minerals upwards
Phloem
Straw-like cells that transport food from the leaves to the other parts of the plant
Root Cap
Specialized cells that protect the tip of the root
Root Hairs
Elongated epidermal root cells used for absorption
Pith
Storage cells in the center of the plant stem
Herbaceous Stems
The soft green stems of annuals and biennials (plants that live for one year)
Woody Stems
The hard stem, covered with bark or perennials (plants that live for many years)
Cambium
A special area of cell division between the xylem and phloem in plants
Bark
Thick layer of dead cells on the outside of woody stems
Bulb
A short underground stem with enlarged leaf bases for food storage (for example onion)
Tuber
A short, enlarged underground stem specialized for food storage (for example potato)
Palisade Layer
A layer of tall cells in a leaf where most photosynthesis takes place
Spongy Layer
A loosely packed layer of cells in a leaf where gas exchange takes place
