Nostrils
The openings in the nose
Mucus
A sticky secretion that lines much of the respiratory system
Pharynx
The region at the back of the nose and mouth above the esophagus
Trachea
The wind pipe; a cartilage-reinforced tube connecting the pharynx and the bronchi
Epifglottis
A flap of tissue that covers the trachea during swallowing
Larynx
The voice box, made of cartilage and contains vocal chords
Vocal Chords
Two thin membranes in the larynx that produce sound when vibrated
Bronchus
Either of the two main branches that connect the trachea to the lungs (plural = bronchi)
Bronchial Tubes
The bronchi, bronchioles, and other branching air passages inside the lungs
Alveolus
An air sac in the lungs where gas exchange between the air and the blood occurs
Diaphragm
A dome-shaped sheet of muscle which separates the chest from the abdomen and is important in breathing
Hiccups
Spasms of the diaphragm that force short intakes of breath
Inhale
To breathe in
Inspiration
The process of inhaling or breathing in
Exhale
To breathe out
