Marrow
A soft substance in the center of some bones where red and white blood cells are made
Periosteum
The lining that surrounds and nourishes as bone
Bone
Cells of connective tissue containing hard calcium salts that support the body
Cartilage
A rubber-like connective tissue that acts as a shock absorber and provides support in flexible areas
Ligament
A fibrous connective tissue that connects bone to bone
Tendon
A fibrous connective tissue that connects bone to muscle or muscle to muscle
Adipose Cells
Cells of connective tissue that store large amounts of fat
Joint
The point where two bones meet; for example, immovable, ball-and-socket, hinge, and gliding
Skeletal Muscle
Voluntary muscles with striations and many nuclei per call; used for movement
Striations
Organized repeating units creating bands or lines of cells; found in skeletal and cardiac muscles
Voluntary
Able to be controlled by the conscious mind
Smooth Muscle
Involuntary muscle with one nucleus per cell and without striations; found in the digestive system
Involuntary
Not able to be controlled by the conscious mind
Cardiac Muscles
Involuntary muscle with branched cells, striations, and a single nucleus per cell; heart muscle
