Chapter 8 Ground Ladders Flashcards
What is the Tip
The extreme top of the ladder.
What are the guides
Wood or metal strips sometimes in the form of slots or channels, on an
extension ladder that guide the fly section while being raised.
what is the Beam
Also called the rail or side rail, this is the main vertical component of
the ladder to which the rungs are attached.
What is the foot pad
Device mounted on the butt of the ladder by a swivel to facilitate the
placement of ladders on hard surfaces.
What are the rungs
Step portion of a ladder running from beam to beam.
What is the fly section
Upper section(s) of extension, pole, or some combination ladders.
what is the pawl
Devices attached to the inside of the beams on fly sections used to
hold the fly section in place after it has been extended. Also called
dogs or ladder locks.
What is the butt spur
Metal safety plates or spikes attached to the butt of ground ladder
beams to prevent slippage.
What is the butt
The bottom end of the ladder; the end which will be placed on the
ground or other supporting surface when the ladder is raised. Also
called the heel of the ladder.
What is the halyard
Rope used on extension ladders to extend the fly sections. Also called
fly rope.
What is the bed section
Also called the base section, this is the lowest and widest section of an
extension ladder. This section always maintains contact with the
ground or other supporting surface.
- List SIX hazard considerations for the safe placement of a ladder.
Overhead power lines and hazards
Uneven ground surfaces
Ice –on ground or wall surfaces
High Traffic areas
Structurally unsound walls
Fire- impingement to ladders
When should a ladder be cleaned and inspected?
A ladder should be cleaned and inspected periodically and after every use.
List ten types of defects that if found would result in the ladder being tagged and
placed out of service.
Heat sensor color changes.
Rungs for tightness.
Damaged or missing bolts and rivets.
Broken or cracked welds.
Deformations of rungs or beams.
Damaged or frayed halyards.
Damaged or impaired function of halyard pulleys.
Damaged or missing guides, stops, and foot pads.
Easy to extend/retract ladder.
Inoperative operation of pawls.
Damaged or non-functioning ladder hooks.
what are 5 types of ladders
Roof
Folding (aka Collapsible or Attic)
Combination
Extension
Mechanical
What are the three methods for determining the optimal climbing angle of a ladder
- Calculate the butt placement as 1⁄4 of the “working” height
of the ladder. - Stand on the ground directly between the beams simulating
standing on a rung of the ladder. Next, reach straight ahead
with both arms perpendicular to your body at shoulder height. - Check the angle indicator on the beam of the ladder (aerial).
when positioning the ladder it should be _________ above the roof line or railing
3-5 rungs
how often should ladders be service tested
All ladders are Service Tested annually as per NFPA 1932 by qualified technicians.
