Q

What should you do if you have declared Mayday?

A

i. Activate PASS
ii. Be sure the PASS alarm is not muffled
iii. Turn on hand-light and point it upward if the smoke is light or along
the floor if the smoke is heavier.
iv. Stay with your crew, it becomes much more difficult to find many
individuals then one group.
v. Make tapping noises with your tool against the floor, wall, etc.
anything to help draw attention to yourself and allow rescuers to find
you quicker
vi. Avoid the fire for as long as possible.
vii. Breach floors to get below fire if necessary.
viii. Keep rescuers aware of your possible location.
ix. If caught, barricade yourself from the smoke, remove fuels, ventilate,
make noise, light stick something through a wall to bring attention.
x. If you rescue yourself, let everyone know. This way the team that has
come in knows that they do not have to take unnecessary risks to get to
you.
xi. Increase radio volume to full
xii. Turn PASS off when transmitting on the radio as receiver will not be
able to hear you over the sound of the PASS
xiii. Stay calm, this way you will be able to commit to action that you help
to save your life and not get you deeper in trouble
xiv. Conserve air; react in a manner that will assist with your rescue. With
good breathing technique you can make your air last much longer

Q

List the five guidelines for mounting, riding on, and dismounting fire apparatus.

A

o Dress before you leave for the emergency scene. Do not dress while the apparatus
is moving.
o Always ride in an enclosed cab
o Wear your seatbelt.
o Wear your SCBA restraining straps. Note that, when you wear SCBA, your center
of gravity changes.
o Wear ear protection when you are riding in the apparatus
o Do not attempt to mount or dismount awhile the vehicle is in motion
o Use the apparatus handrails when mounting or dismounting the apparatus.
o Jump clear of the apparatus if you suspect an electrical hazard at the scene only if
it is a life-threatening situation. EPCOR’s first recommendation is always to
remain on the apparatus if you suspect an electrical hazard. The potential hazards
of leaving the vehicle are far too great. You are in no immediate danger if you
remain in the vehicle. If possible, drive the vehicle out of the danger zone.
