Chapter 2 Rank & Structure Flashcards
Define discipline as it pertains to an organization?
Discipline refers to the organization’s rules, regulations, or policies that define the
limits or boundaries for the expected performance required to satisfy the goals and
objectives of the organization. Discipline within the Edmonton Fire rescue Service
is defined within the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and the Standard
Operating Guidelines (SOG’s).
What are the four core values and give a brief description of each?
● SERVICE – We fulfill our mission to serve the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
365 days a year.
● SAFETY – We make public safety and firefighter safety our number one priority
through ongoing training, development and innovation.
● RELATIONSHIPS – We build and maintain public trust through integrity,
dedication, professionalism and accountability.
● TEAMWORK – We work together as a team. We can only achieve our mission and
our other core values by working closely with our internal and external partners.
Define Unity of Command.
Unity of command is the principle that a person can report to only one officer
(supervisor). Directly, each subordinate reports to their designated officer.
However, indirectly, everyone reports to the fire chief through the chain of
command.
Explain and give an example of division of labour.
Division of Labour is the dividing of large operations into smaller manageable
tasks. These small tasks are then assigned to specific individuals. Within the Fire
Rescue Service, division of labour is necessary at emergency events to maximize
the safety and accountability of personnel, to prevent duplication of efforts, to
define specific and clear –cut assignments, and to assign responsibility for the tasks
outlined.
Define span of control.
The chain of command is coordinated and maintained by a span of control. Span of
control defines the number of personnel or functional units one individual can
effectively manage. A rule of thumb in the fire service is that an officer can directly
supervise three to seven firefighters or functional units effectively, with FIVE being
optimum. A functional unit could be a staffed fire apparatus (pump, rescue, ladder,
tanker) or a task force (a group of similar apparatus).
Define the primary mission of the Edmonton Fire Rescue Service.
The primary function of the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services is to protect people
and property through fire prevention programs, fire suppression, first response to
emergency medical events, motor vehicle collision responses, technical rescue
responses, hazardous material responses, and fire investigations.
