Chapter 6 Personal Protective Equipment Flashcards
Structural firefighting PPE consists of what 10 pieces of gear?
- Firefighting Helmet
- Flash Hood
- Bunker coat
- Bunker pants
- Fire fighting Gloves
- Fire fighting Boots
- Eye Protection
- Hearing Protection
- Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) complete with PASS alarm
- Face Piece
what color of helmet does a firefighter wear
Black with yellow illumination
What color helmet does an officer wear
red with yellow illumination
What three components make up the Protective coat?
a. The outer shell
b. Moisture barrier
c. Thermal Layer
Should hearing protection be worn in the apparatus at all times? Y/N
Yes
Can you receive burns while wearing Wildland coveralls?
Yes, coveralls do not offer any heat protection and that you can still get burned
as the coveralls only offer flash burn protection.
What limitations are there as to how long an air bottle will last?
a. Limitations of Air Supply
b. Limitations of Equipment
c. Limitations of the Wearer
What are the four components that make up an SCBA
a. Cylinder
c. Facepiece
b. PASS System
d. Harness
What is the pressure in a full SCBA bottle and at what pressure do you change?
a. 4500 psi Full
b. @ or <3600 psi change
At what pressure difference between the chest mount gauge and the bottle indicator
should you report this?
a. 300-400 psi
b. Identify which of the two components is the cause of the issue, tag it as out
of service, inform your officer, and have the service/salvage pick it up for
repair at the Air Room.
At what pressure does the Vibralert alarm activate?
1500 psi
If the regulator ceases to function what should you do?
Turn on the bypass on the regulator, activate your PASS and immediately
exit the contaminated atmosphere. Report to an officer immediately.
How do you clean the face piece?
a. If general clean is all that is needed use soap and water spray on Percept let sit for a few seconds and wipe off.
b. The face piece needs to be disinfected - spray on Percept and let sit for 5 minutes. Then air dry.
How is the PASS activated?
a. It is automatically activated when the bottle is opened.
b. Manually when the red alarm button is depressed and system reset
How long after not moving will the PASS go into full alarm and how can it be reset?
a. 30 seconds - if the sensor is not moved for 20 seconds it will go into
pre-alarm and if not moved for another 10 seconds it will ramp up into full alarm.
b. By pressing the yellow button twice
What does the daily check of the SCBA include?
a) Inspect cylinder and harness, including air cylinder retention collar for visible damage.
b) Check air cylinder pressure.
c) Fully open air cylinder valve.
d) Check that the PASS alarm warns after approximately 20 seconds of
non-movement.
e) Check the chest mount console gauge. A pressure difference of 300 to 400 psi or more between the cylinder gauge and the console gauge should be reported to the Air Room. Tag and send both the bottle and the harness to the Air Room.
f) Close air cylinder valve.
g) Check the alarming systems function: bleed air from the regulator,
Vibralert and Cricket alarm will activate at approximately 1500 psi chest gauge pressure.
h) Deactivate PASS.
i) Inspect harness for wear, damage and cleanliness.
j) Extend and straighten all straps.
Why is it important to perform an N-95 mask fit check?
A properly fitted mask seals to your face and reduces the potential for
contamination entry as well as eyewear fogging when wearing the mask.
What are all the swift water stations as of april 2021
Stations 1, 6, 7, 11, 12, 19, 21, 22, 24
as per SOG 2C-2.20 what is the procedure to have gear cleaned repaired or replaced. (hazardous materials)
▪ Inform your officer, when PPE, Station Wear, and/or equipment
(including SCBA) may be contaminated
▪ Ensure contaminated items have been properly prepared, by bagging
with a clear hazmat bag provided on all front line apparatus
as per SOG 2C-2.22 what is the procedure to
ensure gear is cleaned, repaired or replaced properly. (bio medica)
▪ Inform your officer when PPE, Station Wear and/or equipment (including
SCBA) may be contaminated
▪ Wear appropriate protective clothing when assigned to bagging
contaminated PPE
▪ Ensure all contaminated PPE and station wear are packaged and sealed in the red plastic bags carried on all apparatus and the placed into a heavy
clear hazmat bag and sealed
With high temperatures occupants within a structure are subjected to three types of injuries:
Thermal Burns
Respiratory burns
Heat stress resulting in cardiovascular collapse
FOUR Respiratory hazards that a firefighter will face are:
- O2 Deficiency
- Smoke
- Toxins
- High temperatures
Do “smoke free” operations require SCBA
“Smoke free” operations such as overhaul and fire investigation still require appropriate PPE up to and including self contained breathing apparatus.
P-100 filters are designed to provide what
a minimum filtration of99.97% for the removal of oil based and non-oil based solid or liquid particulates.
