Chapter 7 Portable Extinguishers Flashcards
- List the five classifications of fire.
Class A
Class B
Class C
Class D
Class K
List the color and symbol used with each class of fire.
Class A – green triangle
Class B – red square
Class C – blue circle
Class D – yellow star
Class K – Black Hexagon, symbol “K”
An extinguisher has a 1A rating. How much fuel is used to establish this rating?
A wood crib made up of 50 pieces of lumber 5cm X 5cm X 50 cm
An extinguisher has a 10B rating. Approximately how much surface area of flammable
liquid fuel of appreciable depth could this extinguisher handle in the hands of a novice
operator?
About 0.9 m2 or about 1 square meter of surface area
An extinguisher has a 10B rating. Approximately how much surface area of flammable
liquid fuel of appreciable depth could this extinguisher handle in the hands of an
experienced operator?
Two and a half times the rating or about 2.25 m2 or about 2 square meters of surface
area
Describe the class and rating of the CO2 extinguisher carried on EFD units.
10BC
Describe the class and rating of the dry chemical extinguisher carried on EFD units.
10A80BC
How much dry powder extinguishing agent is carried in the extinguishers on EFD
rescue units and what material will it extinguish?
14 kg of dry powder used of burning metals of sodium, potassium, sodium/potassium
alloys, or magnesium.
Identify what the mnemonic REACT stands for?
Rescue – initial evacuation of people in the room containing the fire
Ensure Doors are closed – when the people in the fire room are evacuated close the
doors to the room to reduce the ability for the fire to grow and to extend a tenable
atmosphere in other rooms for evacuation.
Activate alarm – activate the fire alarm system in the building. If there is no system
have a designate notify others in the building.
Call 911; – activate other Emergency resources in the event the fire extinguisher cannot
contain the fire, to insure that professional resources are on their way.
Try to Extinguish – return to the fire room and attempt to use the appropriate (class &
rating) extinguisher to control the fire.
When operating a CO2 extinguisher what operation and safety factors must be used by
the operator?
Ensure a safe approach (back to wind) and a safe egress.
Ensure the power source energizing the fire is disconnected.
PASS to apply the CO2 onto the burning material.
Effectiveness is limited in windy conditions.
Effective when used in confined spaces.
Range is limited ~ 1 to 2.5 meters and discharge time is ~ 10-30 seconds.
CO2 gas temperature – Can reach (– 100 degrees C)
Static electricity will build up in horn during discharge; ensure you hold the grounded hose
when operating
Ensure exposed flesh is not in contact with discharge horn.
Back away from the fire
When operating a dry chemical fire extinguisher what operation and safety factors must
be used by the operator?
REACT
Ensure a safe approach (back to wind) and a safe egress.
Ensure the power source energizing the fire is disconnected.
PASS to apply the dry chemical onto the burning material.
Effectiveness is limited in windy conditions.
Range is limited ~2 to 4.5 meters and discharge time is ~ 10-25 seconds.
Avoid inhaling dry chemical dust.
Back away from the fire
When operating a dry powder fire extinguisher what operation and safety factors must
be used by the operator?
REACT
Ensure a safe approach (back to wind) and a safe egress.
Ensure the power source energizing the fire is disconnected.
Ensure the dry powder is compatible with the burning metal.
PASS to apply the dry powder onto the burning material.
Dry powder can be scooped or shoveled onto the fire.
Ensure the powder completely covers the metal
Watch for burn through of the dry powder.
Range is limited ~2 to 4.5 meters and discharge time is ~ 10-25 seconds.
Avoid inhaling dry chemical dust.
Back away from the fire
What is the discharge time and distance for the CO2 extinguishers carried on an EFRS
Rescue Unit?
~1 to 2.5 meters and discharge time is ~ 10-30 seconds.
What is the discharge time and distance for a dry chemical extinguisher carried on an
EFRS tanker unit?
~2 to 4.5 meters and discharge time are ~ 10-25 seconds.
What does PASS stand for
●Pull Pin – break the witness wire and pull the safety pin.
● Aim – aim the nozzle of the extinguisher towards the base of the fire.
●Squeeze – squeeze the trigger of the extinguisher.
●Sweep – direct the extinguisher stream at the base of the fire and sweep the
stream back and forth to cover the width of the fire base and into the burning
material. Apply the extinguishing agent until the fire is out or the extinguisher is
exhausted. Back away from the extinguished or suppressed fire.
Define saponification
Saponification is a reaction that emulsifies the oil to form a type of soap that
floats on the surface of the oil and prevents re-ignition of the oil vapors.
