What does the DSM5 say abt depression symptoms in order to be diagnosed
A
- symptoms must be present for most of the day, more days than not for at least 2 weeks
- duration and severity separates this from average depression
- symptoms must co occur (5/9 symptoms outlined in DSM-5)

Two categories of mood disorders
A
- unipolar: change is mood in direction of depression
- bipolar: cycles of mania and depression

Symptoms of depression (DSM5)
A
- depressed mood/loss of pleasure
- diminished interest/pleasure
- weight loss/gain w/out trying/appetite loss/increase
- Insomnia/hypersomnia
- psychomotor agitation/retardation
- fatigue/loss of energy
- worthlessness/guilt feeling
- inability to concentrate/decide/think
- recurrent thoughts of death/suicide

- suffering from one or more mental disorders

persistant depressive disorder
A
- depressed mood fro more days than not, lasting for at least two years, 3/6 more symptoms
- symptoms: appetite disturbance, sleep disturbance, low energy, low self esteem, poor concentration/decision making, and hopelessness

mania vs hypomania
A
- mania: periods of elevated, expansive, or irritable mood lasting at least one week + three or more symptoms
- hypomania: less severe than mania, four days, connected to real world
- symptoms: increased energy/self esteem/grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, pressured speech, attention/concentration issues
- judgement is impaired, risky behaviour
