Chapter 7: Functional Anatomy of the Brain Flashcards
What are Gyri?
Elevated ridges of tissue in the brain.
What are Sulci?
Shallow grooves that separate gyri.
What are fissures?
Deep grooves which separate regions of the brain.
What are basal nuclei?
Small islands of grey matter in the white matter.
What does the cerebral cortex control?
Speech, memory, logical and emotional response, as well as consciousness, interpretation of sensation and voluntary movement.
What does the pariental love control?
The primary somatic sensory area. Allows you to recognize pain, coldness, or a light touch.
What does the occipital love control?
Vision
What does the temporal lobe control?
Hearing, and olfactory senses.
What does the frontal lobe control?
Conscious movement. Also areas involving speech, and higher intellectual thinking.
What does hypothalamus help regulate?
Temperature, water balance, and metabolism. Also, thirst, appetite, sex drive, pain, and pleasure centers are here.
What do the choroid plexuses form?
Cerebrospinal fluid.
What does the midbrain/ cerebral peduncles control?
Reflex centers involving hearing and vision.
What do the pons control?
Breathing
What is the medulla oblongata responsible for?
Regulation of visceral organs. Contains centers for heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, swallowing, and vomiting.
What is the reticular formation responsible for?
Motor control of the visceral organs.
