Ch. 14.1- A Brief History of Vaccines Flashcards
In the citrate test, what would the results be if the organism utilized citrate?
The green slant would turn blue and/or there might be growth on the slant
In the citrate test, what would the result be if the organism did not utilize citrate?
There would be no color change and no growth
What does positive citrate result mean?
It means there was color change to blue or there was growth on the slant and the organism does utilize citrate.
What does a positive urease test show?
The urea will turn pink and it means the pH has gone up.
What does a negative urease test look like?
Urea will be yellow or orange
In a citrate test, what happens to the pH of the bromothymol blue dye if it turns from green to blue?
The pH is going up and becoming more alkalotic.
What does the SIM medium reveal?
Determination of sulfur reduction, indole production, and motility
What happens if the medium turns black in the SIM medium?
Positive for sulfur reduction
In the SIM medium, there will be a direct needle stick. What demonstrates motility?
If the medium turns black, or if the needle stick appears hazy then it is positive for motility.
In the SIM medium, what indicates indole positive organisms?
Indole positive organisms will show a red on the top of the medium.
On the MacConkey plate, what does no growth indicate?
A gram positive bacteria
On the MacConkey plate, what does a pink result mean?
Gram negatrive- Fermentation of lactose to acid- this will decrease the pH and turn the macConkey plate pink
On the MacConkey plate, what does what does growth with no color change mean?
Gram negative but unable to ferment lactose
