Chapter 2: Acids and Bases Flashcards
Bases
Anything greater than 7 on the pH scale is considered a base.
Acids
Anything lesser than 7 on the pHscale is considered a base.
What is the pH of water?
7
What is the pH of blood?
7.35-7.45
What is pH?
The relative concentration of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in a solution.
Solvent
A liquid or a gas in which smaller amounts of other substances can be dissolved or suspended.
Solutes
Substances that can be dissolved or suspended in a solution.
Solution
When a solvent is combined with a solute and suspends or dissolves that solution. Only called this when solute particles are exceedingly tiny.
Suspension
When solute particles are fairly large.
Colloid
When solute particles are intermediate in size.
