Chapter 10: Cell Function Flashcards
What is the function of a Neutrophil?
Active phagocyte that increases rapidly during short term acute infection.
What is the function of a Erythrocyte?
Transport oxygen bound hemoglobin and all amount of Carbon Dioxide.
What is an Eosinophil and what is its role?
They kill parasitic worms by deluging them with digestive enzymes; play a role in allergic reactions.
What is a basophils and what is its role?
Release histamine (vasodilator chemical) at sited of inflammation; contain heparin, an anticoagulant.
What is the role of a lymphocyte?
Part of immune system.
B lymphocytes produce antibodies.
T lymphocytes involved in graft rejection, fighting tumors and viruses via direct cell attack.
What does a monocyte do?
Active phagocytes that become macrophages in the tissues; long term cleanup team; increase in chronic infection such as TB.
