Chapter 4: Body Membranes Flashcards
What do body membranes do?
Line or cover, protect and lubricate body surfaces.
What are the four membrane types?
Cutaneous, mucous, serous, synovial.
Where is cutaneous membrane located?
It is the skin, or superficial epidermis.
What is cutaneous membrane made up of?
Keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. This is the only dry membrane.
The Function of this membrane is to protect.
Where is mucous membrane located?
Lines all body cavities that open to the exterior. Hollow organs of the respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts.
What is mucous membrane made up of?
Stratified squamous epithelium (in mouth and esophagus) or simple columnar epithelium (the rest of the digestive tract). This is a wet membrane.
The Function of this membrane is mostly absorption and secretion.
Where is serous membrane located?
Lines body cavities that are closed to the exterior (dorsal body cavity, and joint cavities.
What is serous membrane made up of?
Simple squamous epithelium, resting on a thin layer of areolar connective tissue.
What is the function of serous membrane?
Allows organs to slide easily across cavity walls and one another without friction.
Where is synovial membrane located in the body?
Line the fibrous capsules surrounding joints.
What is the function of synovial membrane?
Cushion organs moving against each other during muscle activity- such as tendons across bones during movement.
What is synovial membrane made up of?
Connective tissue.
