Chapter 6: The Muscular System Flashcards
How much body mass is made up of muscle?
Almost one half.
What are the three muscle types?
Skeletal, Cardiac, and Smooth
Which types of muscle are called muscle fibers?
Skeletal and Smooth
Which muscle type is the largest?
Skeletal
Endomysium
Sheath that wraps each muscle fiber.
Perimysium
A large sheath that wraps groups of muscle fibers that are wrapped in a endomysium.
Fascicle
A group of muscles that are wrapped together in perimysium.
Epimysium
Tough “over-coat” that which covers the entire muscle. Wrapped around several fascicles which forms an entire muscle.
Aponeuroses
Sheetlike combinations of epimysia.
Tendons
Cordlike combinations of epimysia.
Three major defining characteristics of skeletal muscle.
Skeletal, striated, voluntary.
Three major defining characteristics of smooth muscle.
Visceral, non-striated, and involuntary.
Three major defining characteristics of cardiac muscle.
Cardiac, striated, and involuntary.
Are cardiac muscle fibers branching?
Yes
What joins cardiac muscle fibers together?
Intercalated discs
