Chapter 3: Epithelium Tissues Flashcards
What are the four major tissue types?
Connective, nervous, muscular, and epithelial tissue.
Epithelial Tissue
The lining covering the glandular tissue of the body. Covers all free body surfaces.
What are the functions of epithelial tissue?
Protection, absorption, filtration, and secretion.
What are the basic subcategories of epithelial tissue?
Simple, stratified, transitional, and glandular.
What are the major roles of simple epithelia?
Absorption, secretion, and filtration.
Where is simple squamous epithelium located?
In the air sacs of the lungs, and forms the walls of the capillaries.
Where is simple cuboidal epithelium located?
In the salivary glands, and pancreas. Also forms the walls of the kidney tubules, and covers the surfaces of the ovaries.
Where is simple columnar epithelium located?
Lines the entire length of the digestive tract.
Where is pseudostratified columnar epithelium located?
Lines most of the respiratory tract. Main roles are absorption and secretion.
What is the role Stratified Epithelia?
To protect
Where is Stratified Squamous Epithelium located?
Mouth, esophagus, and outer portions of skin.
Where are stratified columnar epithelium located?
Mainly in the ducts of large glands.
Where is transitional epithelium located?
Forms the lining of urinary bladder, the ureters, and part of the urethra. All part of the urinary system.
Where is glandular epithelium located?
Endocrine (thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary glands) and exocrine (sweat and oil glands, liver, and pancreas) glands.
