Chapter 1: 11 body systems and what they do. Flashcards
What are the 11 body systems?
1) Integumentary
2) Skeletal
3) Muscular
4) Nervous
5) Endocrine
6) Cardiovascular
7) Lymphatic
8) Respiratory
9) Digestive
10) Urinary
11) Reproductive
What does the integumentary system do?
Protects body, waterproofs it, regulates body temperature. Has temperature, pressure, and pain receptors.
What does the integumentary system consist of?
Skin
What does the skeletal system consist of?
Bones, cartilages, ligaments, and joints.
What does the skeletal system do?
Framework for movement, protects, formation of blood cells, storehouse for minerals.
What does the muscular system consist of?
Skeletal muscles
What does the muscular system do?
Contract
What does the nervous system consist of?
Brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sensory receptors.
What does the nervous system do?
Body’s vast acting control system. Responds to changes inside and outside the body. EX- Temperature, sound, light, or stretching of muscles, or decrease in oxygen.
What does the endocrine system contain?
Pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, thymus, pancreas, pineal, ovaries (in females), testes (in men). They are not connected anatomically.
What does the endocrine system do?
Slow acting control system. Releases hormones that travel to relatively distant organs. Growth, reproduction, and food used by cells are all controlled by the endocrine system.
What does the cardiovascular system contain?
Heart and blood vessels.
What does the cardiovascular system do?
Carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other substances to and from the tissue cells.
What does the lymphatic system contain?
Lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and other lymphoid organs such as the spleen and tonsils.
What does the lymphatic system do?
Returns fluid leaked from blood vessels back to them. Also help clean blood and house cells involved in immunity.
