What are basic personal safety precaution you should always take when handling pesticides?
Never eat, drink, etc.
wash your hand before going to the bathroom
follow all label directions
do not wipe gloves on your work clothes
launder your work clothes at the end of the day
shower at the end of the day
use common sense
What is a cholinesterase test? How does it protect you?
A cholinesterase test determines the level of the nerve enzyme in your blood stream. Organophosphate and chromate insecticides inhibit the enzyme. Testing can show if you have been poisoned by exposure
What is the role of PPE?
Clothing and devices you wear to protect your body from exposure to pesticides. It keeps pesticides aways from your body.
How does the level of protecting PPE provides vary?
Varies with the type and thickness of material used and the pesticide involved
What are the three ways the barrier PPE provides can be breached?
Penetration - leak through the material
Permeations - seeps through the material
Degradation - physical breakdown of material
Where can you find the PPE requirements on a peptide label?
label will list the minimum PPE required will be listed un the precautionary statements. Plus there will be additional notes for agricultural works under the agricultural use requirements sections
What is the purpose of the EPA PPE selection chart?
PPE material vary regarding when pesticides they are resistant to. The chart shows you the category of pesticide and how resistant different PPE is to it
What clothes should you wear whenever you handle a pesticide?
Long sleeve shirt, long parts, shoes, and socks. Should be made out of sturdy material and free of holes and tears. They should only be worn when handling pesticides
What levels of protection do clothes, coveralls and aprons provide?
Clothes: provide some protection
Coveralls: not always chemical resistant
Apron: protects the form of your body from splashes and billowing dust.
Why should you were protective gloves?
Most common site of pesticide exposure. Chemical resistant gloves can reduce exposure by 99%
What is the proper use of gloves?
When arms are mostly lowered wear sleeves outside the gloves to prevent pesticides from running down your gloves
If your hands are mostly raised leave your gloves outside you selves and cuff them to prevent pesticide from running down your arm
wash them before taking them off
What is the proper use of footwear?
never wear open toed shoes
use chemical resistant footwear when specified
if it is likely to get on your lower legs wear knee high chemical resistant boots
wear pant legs outside your footwear
avoid putting shoes on with contaminated hands
what is the proper use of headgear?
wear a chemical resistant hat with a wide brim or hood
hats must not contain absorbent material such as cotton leather or straw
what is the proper use of eyewear?
must wear goggles, face shield, safety glasses or a full face respirator
have eyewash readily available
Air supplying respirator: level of protection, when to use, when to replace it?
provide clean uncontaminated air from an outside source
use in low oxygen environments
