Chapter 5 Flashcards
Why can pesticides be harmful to people?
As living things we share many trains with pests. A pesticide can have the same effect on our bodies that it has on a pest
Risk
a pesticides potential to cause you harm
Toxicity
a measure of a pesticides ability to cause harm. It is a property of the ai and formulation so some products have a lower toxicity than others
Exposure
Occurs when a pesticide gets in or on your body
Does the source of a pesticide affect how toxic it is?
toxicity is indecent of its source. whether it is natural or man made it has no bearing on how it is to humans
Acute vs Chronic pesticide exposure
Acute exposure: single dose of a pesticide
Chronic exposure: exposure over a long period of time
What is the dose time relationship between risk and pesticide exposure
the dose - how much pesticide you are exposed to in an event
time - how long you are exposed and/or how many times you were exposed.
Your risk increase when the dose and/or frequency of exposure increases
Why do people differ in their susceptibility to toxins?
Weight, age, gender, health conditions, environment
Dermal Exposure
absorbed through the skin and enters the blood stream
Risks: not wearing gloves, not washing hands, splashing or spilling, exposure to drift, touching treated plants/soil/animals
Eye Exposure
absorbed through the eyes
risks: rubbing eyes, splashing in eyes, handling without eye protection, applying in windy weather
Oral Exposure
swallowing pesticide
Risks: not washing hands, splashing pesticide in mouth
Inhalation Exposure
inhaling pesticide
risks: handling in poorly ventilated area, handling dusts, not using a respirator, exposure to drift
What is the effect of formulation on skin absorption?
Oil based formulation are absorbed through the skin more readily than water based formulations
It is easy to get dry formulations on your hands and then touch other parts of your body
How do non applicators become exposed to pesticides?
Touching treated surfaces
inhaling pesticide vapors
pesticides remaining on crops after harvest
Where on the label can you find hazard information?
Precautionary statements subheading: Hazards to Humans and Domestic Animals
