Chapter 15 Flashcards
Residue on agricultural commodities
How much, if any, pesticides or its breakdown products remain on or in the crop or animal when such commodities are ready to be sold for food or feed
Tolerance on agricultural commodities
the maximum amount of a residue that may legally remain on or in food or feed when the crop, animal, or animal product is ready for market or livestock feeding
What happens if tolerance is exceeded on an agricultural product
commodity will be condemned or subject to seizure by the government to prevent people or animals from consuming it; violators may be prosecuted
How does the Food Quality Protection Act assess tolerances
FQPA establishes tolerances on the total exposure from residues found in food, drinking water, and non dietary sources. The more use a pesticide group has the greater the chance it will cause the aggregate exposure to be exceeded and some of its uses cancelled
How are tolerances set and enforced
Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) governs the establishment of pesticide tolerances for food and feed products. administered by the EPA and FDA.
Considers:
The toxicity of the pesticide and its breakdown products
how much of the pesticides is applied and how often
how much of the pesticide remains in or on food by the time it is marketed
FDA tests food for compliance with tolerances
What is an example of a direction that must be followed to help prevent tolerances from being exceeded?
preharvest interval - days to harvest
preslaughter interval - day to slaughter
freshening interval - days between application and milking
grazing restrictions
Where can you find information about tolerances on the pesticide label?
use directions for each site in the directions for use section of the label
How does following the pesticide label direction prevent tolerances from being exceeded?
prevents residue from exceeding tolerances on food, feed, or animal products
