Chapter 26 Flashcards
Why are risks high during mixing and loading?
you can easily be expose to pesticide when you handle and pour from open containers
you handle pesticides in their most concentrated form
your water source can be vulnerable to contamination
spills of concentrated pesticides can occur
When should you mix and load pesticides and why?
to reduce the risk of ending up with equipment full of pesticide mix and load pesticides just before applying them
what are features of a good mixing and loading site?
mix and load outside or in a well ventilated area with good lighting. The site should be away for other people, livestock, pets, food or feed. Protect surface and groundwater by mixing away fro, wells, as site that slope away from water sources, at the site of application or over a containment pad
why does using water what a high ph a problem?
some pesticides can break down if they pH is 8.0 or greater
What can you do about water with a high Ph?
use buffering agents to adjust the ph so it is in the 4-6 range
What is the proper selection and storage or tools used for measuring pesticides and opening pesticide containers?
use plastic measuring tools
measuring tools that cover a range of volume,es
scales to measure weight
hard stable surface to place the scale
How should you select PPE during mixing and loading?
check the label for loading PPE
always put the PPE on before opening the container
you can always wear more protection than the label requires
How should you open pesticide containers and pour out contents?
open carefully to prevent splashes, spills or airborne power
use a sharp knife to open bags
stand with your head above the container and the equipment opening to avoid splashes or inhaling product
stand upwind of the opening
never use your mouth to siphon pesticides
close containers immediately after use
What is the purpose and benefits of closed handling systems for mixing and loading pesticides?
allows you to remove pesticide from its original container, rinse the empty container, and transfer the pesticide and rinse solution to the spray tank without contact the pesticides.
increase handler safety
decrease the occurrence of spills
provide a more accurate measurement of pesticide concentration
What are the benefits of fully emptying containers? What are the consequences of not?
save money by using more of the container’s contents
protect the environment from potential source of contamination
meet federal and state regulation on use and disposal
reduce disposal costs
make container eligible to be accepted by pesticide container recycling programs
When should you empty a pesticide container using triple rinsing or the equivalent?
when they contained liquid pesticides, when specific instructions call for it, state pesticide regulations require it
Where can you find requirements for emptying and rinsing pesticide containers?
on the label
What are the steps for triple rinsing plastic containers?
let the container drain into the tank
fill the container 20% full with water
secure the cap and shake to rinse
remove the cap and rain the rinsate into the spray tank
repeat two more times
puncture the used container and mark with the date and rinse method used
what are the steps for pressure rinsing plastic containers
let the container drain into the spray tank
while holding the container over the spray tank push the pointed pressure rinse nozzle through the side of the pesticide container
pressure rise the container for at least 30 seconds
drain the rinse water directly into the spray tank
throughly rinse the container cap with a slower flow of water, capturing the rinse water in the spray tank
What are the steps for emptying bags?
empty the content into the spray tank of hopper
with the bag over the equipment cut the opposite end of the bag and shake any material trapped in the corner of the bag into the application equipment
What should you do with pesticide containers after mixing and loading?
do not leave them unattended. return them to a secured storage area of secure them in a vehicle
Which label directions should you follow if you mix two or more pesticides together in the same spray tank?
you must comply with whichever label is the most stick
what are the benefits and potential problems of tank mixing two or more pesticides?
benefit : improves control of the target pest or controls additional pest with the same application. saves time and labor
cons: some pesticides are not compatible, timing needs to be right to be effective against target pets, application method needs to be appropriate for both products, can impact the results of the application
What are compatible and incompatible pesticides?
compatible: when two pesticides can be mixed and applied together without adversely affecting the mix of the results of the application
incompatible: when problems do develop when two pesticides are mixed
What is physical incompatibility? Example?
failure of products to stay uniformly mixed in the spray tank. can result in putty or paste formation
What is chemical incompatibility? Example?
when mixing certain pesticides together alters the activity of one or more of them.
if two herbicides labeled for use on corn are chemically incompatible they can harm the corn when applied together
What steps can you take to avoid problems with incompatibility
check the pesticide label
use a test jar to check for physical incompatibility
Where can you find information regarding compatibility test and mixing pesticides on the label
under the directions for use sections usually titled mixing instructions or compatibility
What is the procedure of mixing pesticides in the spray tank?
follow the label when it provides mixing directions
put 1/4 to 1/2 as much carrier as needed for the spray mix
add compatibility agents
follow WALE:
Wettable Powders, and other dry suspensions
Agitate the tank mix and add carrier as needed
Liquid suspensions such as flowables then solutions and any adjutants
Emulsifiable Concentrates
add the rest of the water or carrier to the tank and maintain agitation
