Chromosome
A threadlike strand in the nucleus that controls cell activity and carries out genetic material to pass traits to offspring.
Gene
A unit of genetic material that determines a trait.
Genetics
The study of inheritance.
Meiosis
Cell division that produces gametes or spores having on set of unpaired chromosomes.
Mitosis
The process by which a cell nucleus divides into two identical nuclei.
Mutation
A change in DNA or chromosomes; can occur in body and sex cells. Most mutations are not harmful.
Nucleic Acid
Large organic molecules that store important information in the cell: the two types of nucleic acids in living cells are DNA and RNA.
Replication
The copying process in which new DNA is created.
X Chromosome
The longer sex chromosome. Females have two X chromosomes, males have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome.
Y Chromosome
The shorter sex chromosome. Males have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome
