Chapter 11 Vocabulary Flashcards
Algae
A type of protist, single-celled or many-celled, containing chlorophyll and having no true root, stem, or leaf such as seaweed.
Budding
A type of asexual reproduction in which a new individual developes from an outgrowth on the parent.
Cilia
Tiny hair-like structures that facilitate movement in protozoans and small worms; also move fluid in animals with greater specialization, as in the human trachea.
Eukaryote
An organism with complex cells, having nuclei, mitochondria, and other organelles.
Fungus
An organism with a membrane- bound nucleus and organelles, most fungi are many-cellled ; examples are mushrooms.
Hyphae
Branching, threadlike filaments that form the bodies of many-celled fungi.
Protist
A member of the kingdom protista, most of which are single-celled organisms, with complex cells and membrane-bound nuclei and organelles, that reproduce by cell division and may make or eat food.
Protozoan
A sigle-celled, animal-like organism belonging to the kingdom protista.
Pseudopodium
A temporary foot -like projection of all cell matter that facilitates protozoan movement and ingestion.
Spore
A reproductive cell produced by sporozoans.
Sporozoa
A group of parasitic protozoan living in the bodies of other animals, produces spores, from which new sporozoans grow.
