Chapter 5- Vocabulary Flashcards
calvin cycle
the second stage of photosynthesis, in which chemical reactions produce glucose and other simple sugars.
chlorophyl
green pigment in plants that captures the sun’s energy for photosynthesis.
chloroplast
an organelle in plant cells that contains chlorophyl.
photosynthesis
the process by which plants use energy from sunlight and raw materials from air and water to make glucose to obtain energy.
fermentation
an anaerobic process in which cells break down sugar or starch into carbon dioxide, either achahol (?) or lactic acid, and a small amount of ATP.
food chain
a sequence of organisms through which food energy passes.
food web
a network of relationships in which the flow of energy branches out in many directions.
metabolism
the continual chemical and physical processes that balance the production consumption storage of energy in an organism.
producer
an organism that make its own food.
respiration
the process by which a cell can break down glucose into carbon dioxide and water.
