Promethazine
(Dopamine antagonist).
Type of medication: antihistamine & anticholinergic
Treats: nausea & vomiting by blocking D2 receptor to calm the nervous system. Sedating.
Side effects: sedation, confusion and disorientation
Important S/E: extrapyramidal symptoms, neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Black Box:
tissue necrosis w/ IV
Respiratory depression in children
Ondansetron
(Serotonin antagonist)
Type of medication: serotonin antagonist that blocks 5-HT3 receptor in the stomach to prevent N/V.
Side effects: HA, diarrhea, poor blood flow of the heart.
Important S/E:
QT prolongation
Serotonin syndrome
3 most common cause of increased iron demand:
Pregnancy.
Blood volume expansion infant to childhood.
Chronic blood loss.
