Somatropin (HGH)
A human growth hormone drug that treats growth hormone deficiency.
Octreotide
A growth hormone suppressant to treat excess GH.
Desmopressin
Treatment for diabetes insipidus and nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting).
MOA: promotes reabsorption of water in kidneys and causes vasoconstriction
Somatropin must be given _____ only.
Parental (by injection) because it will be inactivated in the stomach if given Po.
What is the therapeutic goal of Desmopressin?
Restore fluid balance.
How long does desmopressin last?
When given at bedtime, it should last through the night.
Somatropin side effects
- otitis media
- edema
- fatigue
Somatropin adverse effects:
- developing antibodies to GH
- allergic response (anaphylaxis)
Herbs to avoid with Ocreotide
Garlic, ginger, ginseng or any herbs that lower blood glucose levels
Ocreotide side effects:
- N/V/D
- headache
- abd pain
- pain at injection site
Ocreotide adverse effects:
- gallbladder dysfunction
- cardiac dysrhythmias
- hyperglycemia
Desmopressin side effects:
- increased BP
- headache, vertigo
- pain/redness at injection site
-abdominal cramps - nausea
- trembling of hands/feet
Desmopressin adverse effects:
- water intoxication: lethargy, confusion, seizures
- hypothermia: fatigue, nausea, confusion
What medication is contraindicated with Ocreotide?
Metformin
Ocreotide should not be used if you have these disorders:
- heart failure
- hepatic impairment
- CKD
