Chapter 5 - Health And Disease - Virus And Bacteria Flashcards
What type of pathogen cannot replicate outside of living cells?
Virus
What do viruses do?
Infect a body cell (the nucleus) and cause it to make replicas of the virus
Why do viruses damage cells?
Because the newly replicated viruses burst from them, causing it to die
What do new viruses do?
Take over other cells and repeat the process
What pathogen is a non-invasive pathogen, and what mean?
A bacterium as it does not physically go into our cells, they just float around them
What does a bacterium do?
It replicates and releases toxins that makes the person ill, or destroys tissue directly
What can be killed by antibiotics and why?
Bacteria can be killed by antibiotics because they do not go inside the cell, whereas viruses can’t be killed by antibiotics as they infect the cells
What is the period when microbes (virus) are reproducing, grow and mature called?
Incubation period
How do bacterium multiply?
They multiply asexually outside cells
