Chapter 4 - Evolution - Species Flashcards
What is convergent evolution?
When animals share features, but are not related/ from the same species, because they evolved in similar habitats
For example, a dolphin and shark both have fins because they live in water, but are not related
What is the basic unit of biological classification?
Species
What is one way to define a species?
What features both physiological (appearance) and biochemical (DNA) that an animal or plant uniquely posses
What is another way to define a species?
Whether or not the animals within it are capable of reproducing to produce fertile offspring
What is a hybrid?
Organism that is usually sterile, parents are different species (eg. A mule is the offspring of a horse and donkey)
What do some genus share?
Common characteristics, but are different species
For example:
Horse = Equus equus
Donkey = Equus hemionus
What does parsimonious mean?
The simplest, most probable answer
