What do tears contain, and what does it do?

Mucus - sticky, stops infections getting in
Salty (alkali) - kills pathogens

Sticky - immobilises infections
Slightly acidic - denatures bacteria

Contains hydrochloric acid - defence against bacteria (denatures it)

Produces sebum, an oily substance which inhibits (stops) the growth of bacteria
